Calvin earned his M.S. in clinical mental health from Georgia State University. As a graduate assistant for the Access and Accommodations Center, he mentored GSU students diagnosed with ADHD, ASD, and other registered learning conditions to help them succeed in their coursework. He completed his clinical training at Kennesaw State University, a site which allowed him to follow his passion for working with teenagers and young adults. While there, he worked with students aged 18-30 to address concerns related to anxiety, depression, identity, relationships, and other issues. Before becoming a therapist, Calvin was a high school English teacher. He taught at every grade level and coached cross country, track and field, and tennis.
Calvin’s highest priorities are to help clients feel understood and hopeful. He creates an environment of safety, authenticity, validation, and non-judgment. Within that context, he focuses on listening to clients closely enough to comprehend their views of themselves, their lives, and other people. As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, Calvin helps clients understand how their particular thoughts, emotions, and behaviors serve important functions and arise for valid reasons. Through that process, he helps clients develop new skills, behaviors, and perspectives to respond more effectively to the difficulties they are encountering.
Calvin has three sisters and one brother, who are his closest friends. Growing up with siblings has contributed greatly to his awareness of family dynamics, values, and roles. Calvin enjoys running and competed in NCAA cross country and track and field during his undergraduate career. He recognizes both the immense benefits of exercise and the ways that exercise can amplify thoughts and emotions that may be detrimental. In addition to running and time with his family, Calvin enjoys tennis, reading, comedy, hiking, kayaking, and video games. He especially appreciates the mindfulness, joy, and transcendence those activities can generate.
Calvin is from Roswell, Georgia and attended high school in Atlanta. He has also lived in New York City, Boston, and Maine. He holds a B.A. in psychology from Bowdoin College and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Columbia University, along with his M.S. from Georgia State.
