Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Atlanta, GA

More Support Than Weekly Therapy, While You Stay Connected To Work, Family, Relationships, And Daily Life.

Adult IOP is a structured, DBT-based outpatient program for adults who need more consistent support than once-a-week therapy that provides typically 3 to 5 days of group therapy each week, in person in Marietta or Alpharetta, or virtually, while you keep living at home and working. (See our general IOP overview → for how intensive outpatient care works and who it’s for.)

Work, parenting, caregiving, or just getting through the week may still be technically possible, but it’s taking more out of you than it used to, and the effects are starting to spill into evenings and weekends too.

At RecoveryDBT, Adult IOP gives you that structure without asking you to step fully away from work, family, or daily responsibilities.

We offer an Adult track and an Adolescent track, and all groups are gender affirming.

Signs You May Need More Support Than Weekly Therapy

It’s not always obvious when you need more support. Sometimes you’re still functioning, working, studying, caring for others but it’s taking more out of you than it used to.

Adult IOP may be the right next step if:

Weekly Calendar

Therapy once a week no longer carries you through the week

Rising Emotion

Emotions feel harder to manage between sessions

Anxiety Cloud

Anxiety, depression, or stress is affecting your daily life

Structured Plan Document

Work, school, or responsibilities feel harder to maintain

Relationship Balance

Relationships feel more reactive or difficult to repair

emotional overwhelm

Burnout is affecting your ability to function

Skills Toolbox

Coping skills aren’t working consistently

Anxiety Cloud

Self-harm urges or suicidal thoughts have come up

You do not need to be in crisis to ask for more support. IOP is often helpful before things reach that point  when you can still participate in daily life but need more consistent care to stay steady. You do not need to be in crisis to ask for more support. Why Adult IOP May Be the Right Level of Care

Choosing IOP isn’t about whether things are “bad enough” it’s about whether you need more support than you’re currently getting. It fills the middle space between weekly therapy and higher levels of care, whether you’re:

Adult IOP helps bridge the gap between understanding what’s happening and responding differently, with more consistency and accountability across the week.

DBT Therapy: Foundation of Our Adult IOP

DBT isn’t an add-on at RecoveryDBT; it’s how our Adult IOP is structured. It’s especially helpful for emotional dysregulation, self-harm urges, suicidal thoughts, relationship instability, impulsive reactions, and burnout. Skills are practiced and strengthened throughout the week, moving treatment from “I understand the pattern” to “I can respond differently when it shows up.”

Adult IOP for Anxiety, Depression, Mood Instability, Self-Harm, and Emotional Dysregulation

Adult IOP isn’t limited to one diagnosis. Many adults reach this level of care because several things are happening at once. Adult IOP isn’t limited to one diagnosis. Many adults reach this level of care because several things are happening at once.

For anxiety, depression, or stress, IOP provides more structure while helping you practice skills during the week. For mood instability, DBT helps you notice escalation earlier. For self-harm urges or suicidal thoughts, treatment focuses on safety and getting through difficult moments with more structure around you. For substance use urges, your therapist helps build contingency management skills and practical ways to meet your needs without relying on substances.

If eating disorder or OCD concerns are part of the picture, those are treated as integrated specialty tracks within your DBT plan, currently offered at our Marietta location  eating disorder care with Best Within You Therapy & Wellness, and OCD treatment (including Exposure and Response Prevention) with The OCD & Anxiety Center.

If you are in immediate danger or may act on suicidal thoughts, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

“After countless IOP’s told me they couldn’t help me, I found Recovery DBT. When they say they specialize in clients that have been turned away from other treatment centers, they really mean it.”

Common Questions About Adult IOP

What makes RecoveryDBT different from other Atlanta IOP programs?

Many programs list DBT as one modality among several. At RecoveryDBT, DBT is the whole model, not an add-on. Every group, individual session, and specialty track is built around the same skill set, so what you learn in one part of treatment reinforces the rest.

How do I know if RecoveryDBT is the right fit, compared to other programs I'm considering?

The clearest way to find out is a direct conversation. Our admissions team will walk through your specific situation and goals, and tell you honestly whether Adult IOP is the right level of care or whether another program or level of care would serve you better.

Will you tell me if RecoveryDBT isn't the right fit for me?

Yes. If your needs are better served by PHP, inpatient care, or a program with a specialty we don’t offer, we’ll say so and help point you toward the right option.

Can I switch to RecoveryDBT if I've already started treatment elsewhere?

Yes. Many clients come to us after starting somewhere else and finding it wasn’t the right fit, whether that’s intensity, approach, or connection with the team. We review where you are and build a plan that picks up from there.

Do you work with my existing therapist or psychiatrist?

Yes, when helpful. Many clients continue seeing an outside provider alongside IOP, and we can coordinate care directly if that’s part of your plan.

What's the difference between IOP and PHP?

IOP means a few sessions a week while you keep living at home and working; PHP is closer to a full-day program, recommended when someone needs more daily structure than IOP provides. See our full breakdown of IOP vs. PHP vs. weekly therapy → for the complete comparison, or talk to admissions if you’re not sure which fits.

You Don't Need to Be Certain to Reach Out

  • If things have been getting harder to manage,
  • If therapy isn’t carrying you through the week,
  • Or if you’re feeling stretched thin  this is a place to start.

There’s no pressure to commit, just a conversation to help you understand what kind of support could help.

RecoveryDBT offers mental health IOP in Atlanta for adults, teens, and families who want more support and a clearer path forward.
