Teen IOP in Atlanta | DBT-Based Outpatient Program

More Support Than Weekly Therapy, While Your Teen Stays Connected To School, Home, And Daily Life.

Teen IOP is a structured, DBT-based outpatient program for adolescents ages 13–18 who need more consistency than once-a-week therapy provides  typically 3 to 5 days of group therapy each week, in the evening after school, in person in Marietta or Alpharetta, or virtually. (See our general IOP overview → for how intensive outpatient care works more broadly.)

Sometimes your teen may still be getting through the week, but it takes more effort than it used to. Emotions feel bigger. Conflict happens more often. School, friendships, or family life may feel harder to manage. What once seemed manageable with weekly therapy may not carry them between sessions anymore.

At RecoveryDBT, Teen IOP gives your teen that consistency without asking them to step fully out of school, home, or daily life.

We offer an Adult track and an Adolescent track, and all groups are gender affirming.

Signs You May Need More Support Than Weekly Therapy

It’s not always obvious when your teen needs a higher level of support. Sometimes it doesn’t look like a crisis, it looks like your teen is still going to school, still coming home, but with more overwhelm, conflict, or difficulty staying steady between sessions.

A teen mental health IOP may be the right next step if:

Weekly Calendar

Weekly therapy no longer seems to carry your teen through the week

Rising Emotion

Emotions feel harder for your teen to manage

Anxiety Cloud

Anxiety or depression is affecting school, home, or daily life

Structured Plan Document

Your teen is avoiding school or struggling to stay engaged

Relationship Balance

Conflict at home is becoming more frequent or intense

Skills Toolbox

Coping strategies aren’t working consistently

Warning Signal : Build-Up

Self-harm urges or behaviors are present

Safety Shield

Suicidal thoughts or safety concerns have come up

You do not need to wait until things become a crisis. Teen IOP is often helpful when your teen needs more consistency than weekly therapy can provide, but doesn’t need 24-hour inpatient care.

Why Teen IOP May Be the Right Level of Care

Why Teen IOP May Be the Right Level of Care

Choosing IOP isn’t about whether your teen is “bad enough”, it’s about whether they need more support than they’re getting. A Teen IOP fills the middle space between weekly therapy and higher levels of care, whether your teen is:

Teen IOP helps bridge the gap between understanding what’s happening and responding differently while staying connected to home, school, and daily routines.

What Treatment Looks Like

Teen IOP at RecoveryDBT is structured, consistent, and connected to your teen’s real life not separate from it. Treatment may include:

Sessions include:

Skills Group Circle

DBT skills groups and individual therapy

Warning Signal : Build-Up

Between-session skill application

Relationship Balance

Family involvement, when appropriate

Phone Support Bubble

24/7 phone coaching with your teen's individual DBT therapist

Medication

Psychiatric support, when needed

What makes it effective is the same skill-practice feedback loop behind all of our IOP tracks (see how it works →) building consistency at home, at school, and with peers, not just in the therapy room.

DBT IOP for Teens

DBT isn’t an add-on at RecoveryDBT; it’s how our Teen IOP is structured. It’s especially helpful for teens struggling with intense emotions, self-harm urges, suicidal thoughts, conflict with parents or peers, impulsive reactions, or shutdown. Skills are practiced and strengthened across the week, moving your teen from “I know what I should do” to “I can use this skill when it actually matters.”

If eating disorder or OCD concerns are also part of the picture, those are treated as fully integrated specialty tracks within your teen’s DBT plan, currently offered at our Marietta location eating disorder care in partnership with Best Within You Therapy & Wellness, and OCD treatment (including Exposure and Response Prevention) in partnership with The OCD & Anxiety Center.

If you are in immediate danger or may act on suicidal thoughts, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Family Involvement Helps Skills Carry Home

Progress is easier to maintain when the home environment understands the skills your teen is practicing. Family involvement isn’t about blame, it’s about helping caregivers respond effectively and support progress outside treatment.

When appropriate, this may include:

A teen outpatient mental health program works best when treatment doesn’t stay isolated from the family system.

Real Progress, From Families Who've Been There

Choosing a program is easier when you can hear how it’s worked for other families from teens learning to manage conflict differently to parents feeling more equipped to support them at home.

“My time in DBT has taught me to find a life worth living even through my hardest struggles. I am now not only alive. I am truly living.”

Allison

Program Graduate

“Our experience was that the program gave structure and a process to work through which led us up and out. We are not ‘perfect’ but we are so much better today.”

Russ

Father of a 15 year old

“Iain provided the guidance our family needed to navigate through treatment and recovery. Our daughter learned coping skills, and we, as parents, also learned how to better support her.”

DBT-Based Teen IOP Care You Can Trust

RecoveryDBT is built around specialized DBT care for teens, adults, and families needing more structured support than weekly therapy can provide. Care includes licensed clinicians and DBT-trained therapists combining thousands of clinical hours and leadership experience from institutions including Kaiser Permanente and Northwestern University, HIPAA-compliant confidential support, psychiatric support when clinically appropriate, and insurance verification.

What makes RecoveryDBT different isn’t the hospital scale. Common Questions About Teen IOP

What makes RecoveryDBT different from other teen IOP programs in Atlanta?

Many programs list DBT as one modality among several. At RecoveryDBT, DBT is the whole model for teens, not an add-on, so what your teen learns in a group carries into individual sessions, family work, and phone coaching consistently.

How do I know if RecoveryDBT is the right fit, compared to other programs we're considering?

The clearest way to find out is a direct conversation. Our admissions team will walk through what’s been happening with your teen and tell you honestly whether Teen IOP is the right level of care, or whether another program or level of care would serve your family better.

Will you tell us if RecoveryDBT isn't the right fit for our teen?

Yes. If your teen’s needs are better served by PHP, inpatient care, or a program with a specialty we don’t offer, we’ll say so and help you find the right option. We’d rather point you in the right direction than keep a family in a program that isn’t working.

Can we switch to RecoveryDBT if our teen already started treatment elsewhere?

Yes. Many families come to us after starting somewhere else with a therapist, another IOP, a hospital program and finding it wasn’t the right fit for their teen. We review where your teen is in treatment, talk through what didn’t work, and build a plan that picks up from there.

Do you work with our teen's existing therapist, psychiatrist, or school?

Yes, when helpful. Many families continue seeing an outside therapist or psychiatrist alongside IOP, and we coordinate directly with them. We can also communicate with your teen’s school on scheduling and any needed accommodations during treatment.

Will Teen IOP interfere with school?

No, Teen IOP groups meet in the evening after school (Marietta, Monday–Wednesday 5:00–8:00 PM; Alpharetta, Tuesday–Thursday 5:00–8:00 PM), so your teen keeps attending their regular school day.

You Don't Need to Be Certain to Reach Out

  • If things have been getting harder for your teen to manage,
If therapy isn’t carrying them through the week,
Or if your family is feeling stretched thin this is a place to start.

There’s no pressure to commit, just a conversation to help you understand what kind of support could help.

RecoveryDBT offers Teen IOP in Atlanta for adolescents and families who want more support and a clearer path forward.
