Teen Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Atlanta

Daily DBT-Based Structure For Teens Ages 13–18 Who Need More Support Than Weekly Therapy Or Iop Without Overnight Hospitalization.

Teen PHP is a full-day, five-day-a-week DBT-based program for adolescents ages 13–18 who need more consistent support across the day than weekly therapy or IOP provides, without stepping away from home at night. (See our general PHP overview → for how partial hospitalization works and who it’s for.)

Your teen may still be getting through the day, going to school, coming home, but emotions are escalating faster than they can manage, even with support in place. What used to hold steady with weekly therapy or IOP isn’t carrying them through anymore.

At RecoveryDBT, Teen PHP gives them that daytime structure while they stay connected to home, family, and the people around them.

We offer an Adolescent track, and all groups are gender affirming.

Teen PHP in Atlanta

What Is an Teen Partial Hospitalization Program?

A teen PHP is a structured, full-day mental health program that sits between weekly therapy or IOP on one side, and inpatient or residential treatment on the other. Your teen attends treatment during the day and returns home each evening the consistency of a higher level of care, without losing the connection to family, home, and community.

At RecoveryDBT, Teen PHP is DBT-led first: the goal isn’t just stabilization, it’s building skills your teen can actually use when emotions rise, at the intensity they actually rise.

Signs Your Teen May Need PHP

There are times when what used to help weekly therapy, even IOP isn’t enough to carry your teen through the day.

PHP may be the right next step if:

Rising Emotion

Emotions escalate quickly and are hard to bring back down

Warning Signal : Build-Up

Self-harm urges or behaviors are increasing in frequency or intensity

Safety Shield

Suicidal thoughts have come up, and safety needs closer support

Structured Plan Document

School avoidance or disengagement is increasing

Relationship Balance

Family conflict is becoming harder to manage at home

Skills Toolbox

Coping skills are difficult for your teen to use independently

Layered Care Steps

A recent crisis or hospitalization needs continued daily support

Weekly Calendar

IOP’s few hours a week aren’t providing enough structure anymore

You don’t need to wait for things to become a crisis. PHP is often most helpful before symptoms escalate further,
when your teen still needs to function day to day, but needs daily structure to do it safely.

If your teen is in immediate danger or may act on suicidal thoughts, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Teen PHP for Depression, Anxiety, Self-Harm, and Emotional Dysregulation

Teen PHP isn’t limited to one diagnosis.

It may support:

Anxiety Cloud

Suicidal thoughts or safety concerns

Stable Self

Emerging BPD traits or patterns of emotional instability

Gentle Meal

Repeating Loop

OCD, through our OCD X DBT track when appropriate

Relationship Balance

Family conflict and communication breakdown

For depression or anxiety, PHP provides more structure than IOP while helping your teen practice skills as symptoms show up during the day, not just once a week. A Day in Teen PHP Can Look Like

Your teen’s exact daily structure is built during intake, based on clinical needs and goals. During PHP, your teen’s full day is dedicated to treatment rather than in-person school attendance. We work with you and your teen’s school directly on next steps for coursework and excused absences during this time.

Family Involvement In Teen PHP

Teens don’t heal in isolation, they heal in relationships. Family involvement in Teen PHP may include:

When appropriate, this may include:

Parents and caregivers are treated as partners in treatment, not just observers of it.

Is Teen PHP the Right Fit, or Would Teen IOP Be Enough?

The clearest signal is whether your teen can still get through the day using their current level of support.

Weekly Calendar

Teen IOP

A few hours of group therapy after school, several days a week, treatment added around the school day.

OFTEN ENOUGH WHEN

Layered Care Steps

Teen PHP

Full days of treatment, PHP steps in for the school day itself, rather than adding treatment around it.

THE BETTER FIT WHEN

Safety Shield

Inpatient care is for moments when your teen needs 24-hour safety support or stabilization that can’t happen at home.

If you’re not sure whether PHP or IOP fits better right now, our admissions team can help you decide.

When Teen PHP May Not Be the Right Fit

PHP may not be appropriate if your teen needs 24-hour medical supervision, is actively suicidal with a plan, is medically unstable, or cannot maintain basic safety at home. In these cases, our team can help you find the right level of care, including inpatient referral when needed.

If your teen is in immediate danger or may act on suicidal thoughts, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Choosing a program is easier when you can hear how it’s worked for other families from teens learning to manage emotions differently to parents feeling more equipped to support them at home.

“Recovery DBT is a wonderful IOP program. Ann Guzman, the owner, is incredible. It is a pleasure to collaborate with this highly skilled team for the eating disorder IOP program.”

Common Questions About Teen PHP

What makes RecoveryDBT's Teen PHP different from other Atlanta programs?

Many programs treat PHP as a generic day-treatment schedule. At RecoveryDBT, Teen PHP is DBT-led first, with family involvement built into the day rather than offered as an occasional add-on.

Where should I send my teen: IOP or PHP?

It depends on how much structure your teen needs right now. If weekly therapy or a few hours a week of IOP isn’t holding steady, PHP’s full-day structure may be the better fit. If your teen can still manage with support a few days a week, IOP may be enough. Our admissions team can help you figure out which one fits based on your teen’s specific situation. You don’t need to know the answer before reaching out.

How does teen PHP differ from inpatient care?

PHP provides daily structure and support during the day, but your teen returns home each evening. Inpatient care means staying at a hospital or facility around the clock for immediate safety and stabilization. PHP is the highest level of care that still allows your teen to sleep at home.

Will my teen fall behind in school?

During PHP, your teen’s day is focused on treatment rather than attending school in person. We’ll work with you and your teen’s school on excused absences and any coursework arrangements during this time. Most teens are able to catch up on schoolwork once they’ve stabilized. Treatment comes first because a teen who isn’t mentally stable can’t meaningfully learn anyway. Your teen returns to their regular school routine once they step down to a lower level of care.During PHP, your teen’s day is focused on treatment rather than attending school in person. Will you tell us if RecoveryDBT isn't the right fit for our teen?

Yes. If your teen’s needs are better served by inpatient care, a lower level of care like Teen IOP, or a program with a specialty we don’t offer, we’ll say so, including if a step-down from PHP to IOP makes more sense once your teen has stabilized.

Can we switch to RecoveryDBT if our teen already started treatment elsewhere?

Yes. Many families come to us stepping down from a hospital stay or residential program, or after finding another PHP wasn’t the right fit. We review where your teen is in treatment and build a plan that picks up from there.

You Don't Have to Decide Alone

You don’t need to know whether Teen PHP, Teen IOP, weekly therapy, or inpatient care is the right fit before reaching out.
Most parents start with a simpler question: something is getting harder for my teen to manage, what kind of support makes sense now? That’s enough reason to begin the conversation.
If getting through the day has become harder for your teen, this can be a place to start.
