Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other neurological disorders.
During a TMS session, an electromagnet is placed on the client’s head and produces a magnetic field. This magnetic field induces an electrical current that stimulates nerve cells in the region of the brain being targeted. The treatment works by stimulating a region of the brain called the dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex allowing improved neuron communication, blood flow, and regeneration of brain cells responsible for improving mood and cognitive function.
At Recovery DBT, we have chosen to provide this breakthrough technology as another evidenced-based treatment that directly improves neurophysiological brain function to allow patients to be able to more fully integrate the DBT skills learned in the individual and group programming.
TMS at Recovery DBT may be provided as a stand-alone treatment or as a complement to our outpatient programs.
